There are several advantages to using PTFE/Phenolic fabrics from Fenner Precision:
- PTFE fabric wear face composites have fabric-rich surfaces with low coefficients of friction and good resistance to shock loads.
- PTFE fiber flock face composites have resin-rich surfaces with high load bearing capabilities.
- PTFE Powder face composites are cost-effective, general-purpose products.
Weave Styles
- Plain weave fabrics are sometimes referred to as a one over one weave, because the warp and filling threads interlace one over one. Plain weave fabrics are structurally and dimensionally stable.
- Sateen weave fabrics are more pliable than plain weave fabrics because the threads interlace four over one. Sateen fabrics have excellent drape properties and form well around spherical surfaces.
Yarn Types
- PTFE fibers have the unique characteristic that the coefficient of friction decreases with increased compressive loads. This makes them well suited for use in high load, slow speed bearings. Also during the drawing process the fiber molecules are aligned which results in the fiber having twenty-five times more strength than the base resin and much greater resistance to cold flow. PTFE fabric-lined bearings are sometimes used at dynamic loads as high as 25,000 psi.
- Nomex (Tm) is a Meta- Aramid and, unlike nylon, is suitable for use at temperatures above 489°F (254°C). Nomex begins to decompose at 700°F (371°C).
- Polyester is a good general-purpose fiber with moderate temperature capability. The melt point is around 489°F (254°C). It also has a low moisture regain of 0.5%
- Glass is a cost effective high modulus fiber with high temperature capabilities and low moisture regain. One disadvantage is its abrasiveness when running in contact with metal.
- Cotton is a natural fiber that varies slightly lot to lot, but has excellent absorbency properties and is relatively none abrasive.
Adhesive Types
- Phenolic adhesive coatings are applied by Fenner Precision. There are various grades for use in applications operating in the temperature range of 65°F to +325°F. Phenolic adhesives are thermoset materials that require refrigerated storage and heat curing.
- Epoxy adhesives are normally supplied and applied by our customers. Some epoxy adhesives cure at room temperature.
- Polyimide adhesive coatings are applied by Fenner Precision. Polyimide adhesives are used in applications requiring high temperature capabilities, e.g. 500°F (260°C) to 700°F (371°C)
- Custom adhesives are also available on request.
